Our Goal:

To make “Jesus the Subject” in everything we do!

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the subject. So, who is Jesus?

Jesus is the very product of God’s love. He is the Son of God and the second person in the Trinity. Born of a virgin, he is fully human and fully God. More than two thousand years ago, he walked the earth and radically changed the culture around him. As the perfect sacrifice, he willingly endured a shameful death on a cross, taking upon himself the punishment that we deserved for our sins.

Three days following his death, he was raised to life again, neutralizing the power of sin and death over our lives. Those who accept Jesus Christ as Savior are no longer bound by the power of sin and have an eternity waiting for them in heaven. As our Lord, he calls us to personal and cultural holiness and transformation. Taking on the likeness of Christ, we seek to change the world through the love of God and offer the hope of Christ to all.

Jesus is the reason we exist. Jesus is the center of what we do. Jesus makes all the difference.

Do you want to make Jesus the subject of your life? You can become a Jesus-follower (a Christian) today!

First, recognize that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Second, understand that the consequence of sin is death, but God’s gift through Jesus Christ is eternal life (Romans 6:23). “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9 NIV).

It begins with a prayer. Talk to God. Ask him to forgive your sins (1 John 1:9), thank him for his sacrifice, and accept his gift to you. He’ll hear you, and you’ll begin a brand new life (2 Corinthians 5:17).

What next?

  • Let your friends and family know of your decision.
  • Connect with a local church.
  • Be baptized as a witness and affirmation of your decision.
  • Share your experience of a new life in Christ with others.

What we believe:

God — God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. He has been reaching to humanity from the beginning with a desire for a relationship with us as is evident from Genesis to Revelation. Genesis 1:1, 26-27; John 3:16; Revelation 3:20

The Holy SpiritThe Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every believer from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under His control daily. John 16:7-13; Romans 8; Galatians 5:25

Man — Man is made in the image of God. On the sixth day of creation God created man and breathed into Him the breath of life. Man is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although God designed man to have fellowship with him, man became alienated from God through disobedience. As a result, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and choose to sin against God. Man is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through his own efforts. Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:23; 6:23; Colossians 1:21-22

The Church — We believe that the true Church is composed of all persons who have received Christ as Savior and are thereby united with all other believers. We believe that God desires unity in the Church for the work of spreading the Good News. All members of the body of Christ are to live a holy life. We believe that God’s standard of life for all Christians is one of moral purity and godliness, to live as Christ. As God’s people, we represent Christ in this world. Therefore we are non-denominational. We are affiliated with the Church of God headquartered in Anderson, Indiana. This affiliation gives us accountability without control. 1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-31; Ephesians 1:22-23 We are committed to the great commandment and the great commission as given by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-40 and Matthew 28:19-20.

The Bible — The Bible is God’s Word to all men. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. The Bible is the inspired, authoritative, infallible Word of God. It is our guide for living. We have no other creed. 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21

Jesus – Jesus was born of a virgin into this world of sin to redeem mankind from their sins. He lived a life completely free of sin, but was condemned to die on a cross. This was an atoning death. He died for our sins—not his own. After 3 days God raised Him from death. He appeared to His followers and to over 500 people before ascending back to the right hand of the Father. He told us in John 14 that He was going to prepare a place for us to receive us for eternity. One day He will return in power and glory to lead the living and the dead to judgment. Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:22-23; John 14:10-30; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4  We believe in Jesus as the one and only way to a right relationship with God. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” It is through Him that we have been reconciled with God. We have been given the responsibility as His followers to help spread this message of God’s reconciliation. People must be able to experience His love and grace through us, His ambassadors. We practice unconditional love for all people without condoning sin as defined in the Bible. If you are seeking answers to some of life’s most difficult questions of purpose and meaning, we believe you’ll find those answers in the person of Jesus Christ. Life in Christ is our goal. Come join us in learning how to follow and serve Him.

Some questions you may have:

1.)  Who is the Church of God?

The Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) is a worldwide movement of people seeking to fulfill God’s desire for the church. We are committed to studying the Word of God and faithfully living it out. We are committed to being the body of Christ in spirit, word, and deed. We commit ourselves to the mission that Jesus Christ gave every believer: to make disciples of all nations. We seek to love and serve all people, beginning with those within our sphere of activity and influence. While we have this core identity, you will find a great diversity of thought and practice within the Church of God. Despite our differences, we share a journey of faith, growing together into the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). We worship, serve, and grow together as citizens of God’s kingdom. We celebrate our life in Christ and embrace our call to be the body of Christ to our world—all to the glory of God.

2.)  When are your service times?

Koinoinia (coffee and donuts) starts at 9:30 AM followed by our main worship services at 10 am. If you are considering joining us for a service, we hope you’ll find a place where you are warmly welcomed and feel at home, even if you’ve never been to church before. No matter where you are in your understanding of Jesus Christ, our prayer is that you will come to know Him better.

We have an excellent children’s church program for children from birth through high school.  We recommend you arrive approximately 15-20 minutes before the service so you won’t feel rushed.

We also have a Student Ministry meeting (5th grade thru 12 grade) which meet on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM, and an adult Bible Study which also meets at 7 PM on Wednesdays.

3.)   Where is the Barberton Church of God located?

Some people would know us best as “the church in front of the big sled-riding hill.”

If you’re not into sled-riding here’s our physical address:

885 N. Summit St.

Barberton, Ohio

44203

4.)  What can I expect at my first visit?

As you enter the church you will be welcomed by one of our greeters who will have a current weekly bulletin with the order of service, news, our upcoming events, mid-week services, etc.  Our greeters are more than happy to answer any questions you may have as well as give you directions.  If you have young children the greeters will be glad to take you to their specific area of ministry as well as introduce you to their leaders.

Our worship services are upbeat and positive, with a blend of traditional hymns and modern choruses. Prayer is a major emphasis. The topical sermons are relevant to real life and the Bible is the final authority. Dress is not an issue here, as many dress very casually and others choose to be more formal.
